About the Book |
Cataloging the history of motoring in Sri Lanka, from the 1900’s to the 1990’s Asgi Akbarally’s book, Classic and Vintage Automobiles of Ceylon can be considered an almanac of Sri Lankan motoring. A thick hardback book containing pictures of 105 classic and vintage cars of Ceylon, this book is filled with wonderful images of cars against iconic Sri Lankan backgrounds. Freddie Alles a highly regarded motoring expert has also contributed to this book with a chronicle on the history of motoring in Ceylon, which is highly informative and explains in detail the advent of motor cars to the island and the halcyon days of motoring in Sri Lanka during the times of the Raj and thereafter. The collection also contains one of the oldest surviving Mercedes in the island a 1936 Mercedes 170V formerly owned by a 70 year old bus owner. This vehicle has remained in its original condition and has been a regular winner at numerous vintage and Mercedes-Benz Pageants. Sleek shiny bodywork interspersed with soft and sharp contours, immaculate leather and highly polished wooden interiors are all features of the Akbarally car collection.
